How does Daclin 1% Lotion work?

Clindamycin inhibits protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosome, thereby blocking the transpeptidation or translocation reactions of susceptible organisms, resulting in stunted cell growth.

Indication of Clindamycin

Daclin 1% Lotion contains clindamycin, a topical antibiotic. It is used to treat acne vulgaris, a common skin condition in teenagers characterized by inflammation, large, red, pus-filled pimples, and the formation of comedones when hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Pharmacology of Daclin 1% Lotion

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that effectively treats infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Derived from lincomycin, it exhibits both antiacne and antibacterial properties. Clindamycin exerts its action by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting the early stages of protein synthesis. This mechanism of action makes it highly effective against a variety of bacteria, particularly gram-positive cocci and certain anaerobic bacteria.

Here is a breakdown of its microbiological activity:

• Aerobic gram-positive cocci: Includes bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis (both penicillinase and non-penicillinase producing strains), Streptococci, and Pneumococci.
• Anaerobic gram-negative bacilli: Covers species like Bacteroides and Fusobacterium.
• Anaerobic gram-positive non-spore-forming bacilli: Encompasses Propionibacterium, Eubacterium, and Actinomyces species.
• Anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci: Includes Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Microaerophilic streptococci, and Clostridium perfringens.

Dosage & Administration of Clindamycin

For acne treatment in adults:

• Apply a thin layer of the 1% Clindamycin preparation onto the affected area twice daily (b.i.d.).

For children aged 12 years and older:

• Apply a thin layer of the 1% Clindamycin preparation onto the affected area twice daily (b.i.d.).

Note: Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 12 years old.

• Wash the face or affected area gently with warm water or soap.
• Dry the skin completely (wait about 30 minutes).
• Apply a thin film of Clindamycin lotion to the entire affected area twice daily.
• Do not wash the applied area for at least 3 hours after application.
• A noticeable improvement is typically seen after about 6 weeks; however, 8 to 12 weeks of treatment may be required for maximum benefit.
• Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and nose while applying the lotion.

Interaction

Clindamycin may interact with other antibiotics (like erythromycin), anticoagulants (such as warfarin), and neuromuscular blocking agents (such as atracurium and vecuronium).

Before using Clindamycin, inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, colitis, asthma, hay fever, eczema, or dermatitis.

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any of the ingredients of this medicine.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• There is no adequate data on the safe use of Lindamax lotion during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown no adverse effects on the fetus.
• It is unknown whether clindamycin is excreted through breast milk following topical administration. However, it can be used during lactation with caution.

Precautions & Warnings

• Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps; wear sunscreen daily.
• Use with caution during lactation as it is unknown whether clindamycin is excreted in human milk following topical application.

Storage Conditions:

• Store the tube below 25°C, away from light and moisture.
